Bachelor of Arts in PHILOSOPHY

The Division of Philosophy of the Department proposed the institution of the BA Philosophy (BA PHLO) Program with the University’s vision and goal of being the pioneer in Philippine development and innovation. This program was envisioned as a mediator between the sciences and the humanities, and as a contributor in the formation and understanding of the Filipino consciousness and identity in a fast-growing, globalized world.

The program was designed to foster and cultivate intellectual speculation through critical and creative thinking with a particular interest in the examination of indigenous Filipino thought.

The BA Philosophy program of the University of the Philippines Los Banos was instituted on September 25, 1997 through the approval of the Board of Regents on its 112th meeting. In 1998, the BA Philosophy program started accepting students as shiftees who graduated in 2001, while in 1999, it welcomed its first batch of freshmen who graduated in 2003. From 2005 to 2010, to make way for the improvement of the program’s faculty profile, the program temporarily discontinued its intake of freshmen. In March of 2010, the University approved the reinstatement of the program. BA Philosophy reemerged as a course choice in the 2010 UPCAT. Since the reinstatement, the program has updated its curriculum and had its first batch of students graduate in July 2015.
