Makiling Review is an open-access bi-annual refereed journal of the Department of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Baños. The journal seeks to promote critical and interdisciplinary scholarship in engagement with contemporary discourses and issues in the arts and humanities in the Philippines, Southeast Asia, and more broadly, the Global South.

The journal welcomes contributions from researchers, creative writers and artists in the areas of communication, media and film studies, linguistics and language education, literature and literary criticism, cultural studies, theatre arts and performance studies, philosophy, visual arts and other related disciplines. It aims to publish scholarly articles, reviews, and creative works that appeal to interested readers within and beyond academic spheres.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

1. Original research articles (5,000-8,000 words with 200-300 word abstract) in communication, media and film studies, linguistics and language education, literature and literary criticism, cultural studies, theater arts and performance studies, philosophy, visual arts and other related disciplines

2. Reviews (1,500-2,500 words) of books, exhibitions, books, articles, foras and other relevant events and texts

3. Creative Works

  • Short story (about 4,000 to 7,500 words) or a suite of 5-7 short prose pieces
  • Excerpt from a novel (with a brief overview of the novel’s project and/or synopsis) subject to same length limitations as the short story
  • Long poems or a suite of seven poems
  • One-act play (20-30 pages)
  • Literary and personal essay, subject to the same length limitations as the short story
  • Excerpts from graphic novels, or full, short graphic stories (about 10 pages, 6″ x 9″). Excerpts should be accompanied by a one-page synopsis of the novel. Images must have a resolution of at least 300 dpi.
  • Work of translation into English or Filipino, accompanied by a brief translation note (about 1500 words) that may explain the translator’s methodological, theoretical, contextual, and even personal insights into the translation process. Copyright permission for the work translated should be secured by the translator.

All submissions should be in a Word document (.doc or .dox), double-spaced, and in 12-point Times New Roman.

A brief biographical note bearing the author’s present designation, institutional affiliation (if any) and e-mail address, as well as information about funding sources (if applicable) should be indicated in a separate Word document.

Deadline for submission for the journal’s maiden issue is June 30, 2022.
