Philosophy in the Public Space: Continuing the Celebration of the UPLB Philosophy Division’s 25th Founding Anniversary
Cassandra Teodosio

The yearlong celebration of the 25 th founding anniversary of the UPLB
Philosophy Division continues with its lecture series on artificial intelligence,
the history of the Division, and contemporary topics in Philosophy by Division
faculty and BAPHLO students. The series of events was held during March
2023 in campus.

Following the lecture of Dr. Celia Bardwell-Jones on Placental Ethics last
September 2022, the second lecture organized a panel on artificial
intelligence entitled “AI think therefore AI am but AI am not: Artificial
Intelligence and its Epistemic and Ethical Consequences” held on 13 March
2023 at MPH 1, CAS A2. The panel was composed of the division’s very own
faculty members Dr. Jacklyn Cleofas and Ms. Ma. Cassandra Ysobel Teodosio,
while Mr. Christian Dave Anda of The Philosophical Society of UPLB, and Mr.
Hanz Samuel Majadas of the UPLB Sophia Circle represented the two
Philosophy organizations in the University. The discussion focused on the
emerging use of artificial intelligence, specifically ChatGPT, in the education
sphere. Moderated by Mr. Jethro Daryll Pugal, the conversation covered how
the AI affects learning styles, how knowledge is produced, and how different
forms of exclusion, oppression, and inequalities come with it.

The third lecture was given by Dr. Nicolo Masakayan, a product of the
BAPHLO program. The theme, “Changes, Challenges, and Commonalities:
Three Generations of BA Philosophy Students (1997-Present)” was a lookback
at the founding of the UPLB BA Philosophy program and served as guide
towards the vision of the Division for the coming years.

Significant part of the lecture included responses from Ms. Ma. Cassandra
Ysobel Teodosio representing the Division, Mr. Miguel Elvir Quitain
representing the BAPHLO Alumni, and Mr. Mark Bonnin Jara representing the
current BAPHLO program students.

The said lecture was held at Gallery 2, CAS A1 on 20 March 2023.
The series culminated with a showcase of the different philosophical topics.
“Four Lectures in Philosophy: Impyerno at Diyos, Environmental Virtue Ethics,
The Evolution of Beauty, Genderless Society” gave the public a peek into the
philosophical mind and method and how issues in philosophy are not outside
the realm of the public sphere, consciousness, and community. The lecture held at Gallery 2, CAS A1 on 27 March 2023 was presented by the
members of the faculty of the Division and its BAPHLO students, including
Asst. Prof. Raemel Niklaus Leyretana, Asst. Prof. Marlon Lat, Ms. Jean
Capacio, and Mr. Enrique Vergel respectively.

The event was organized by the Philosophy Division’s Lecture Series
Committee headed by Dr. Rizalino Malabed, in partnership with The
Philosophical Society of UPLB and the UPLB Sophia Circle, and with the
support of the UPLB Department of Humanities.
